A tasty meal at the Harbour Guest House

“It was always our dream to have a guesthouse and tearoom” explained Christine Wilding. She and husband Clive moved to Amble last year to make their dream come true.

Christine who is originally from South Shields was a childminding project manager for Buckingham County, while Clive’s background was in Marine Engineering and then he worked as a Radiopharmaceutical Chemist in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

“Then Clive was made redundant, so we decided to look around for properties to ‘live the dream'” said Christine. ” We looked in so many places, we stumbled upon this one on the internet and decided to come and have a look. We liked the area, the beauty of Northumberland is fantastic. The sandy beaches, the castles, the place just ticked all our boxes.”

The Harbour Guest House has six bedrooms and a tearoom, which the couple are now opening as a Bistro on Tuesday to Saturday evenings from 5-9pm.

“We have decided to open as a Bistro in the evenings” said Clive “Our business caters for cyclists, walkers, holidaymakers and locals as well. We would like to encourage local people to come in and try our traditional and locally sourced food. Just about everything is sourced within a 30 mile radius.”

The restaurant is licenced and there’s an Early Bird Special menu from 5.30 – 7.30pm with any one course for £6.95. Early Bird dishes include chicken breast, shoulder of lamb, Amble fish pie, salmon steak and pasta.

“We want to provide top quality food as cheaply as possible” says Clive. You can ring Christine and Clive to book a table on 01665 710381.

Had a couple of meals in the Evening Bistro as a couple and twice with friends,

The Menu is not extensive but adequate selection.

The Beef noshpot is a cracker. Soups home made served with fresh baked rolls!!.
Prawn toast actually has prawns in it .

Were there last Friday four starters,, four main courses,, two sweets,, one and a half litre of house red (excellent Merlot)
half litre of house white(for the ladies) and a can of 7 up. one of the girls fancied something not on menu no problem chef sorted it.

    total cost for all £69.

from 5.30 pm to 7.30pm two courses for £10. Starter + main or sweet + main. from earl bird menu

we notice that those locals that have tried it return !

Excellent service food piping hot and very tasty.

Visited this Bistro at the end of July (approx 8.30pm) and was not disappointed. I had the Mushroom and Stilton Gateau. It was listed as a vegetarian option and although I’m a confirmed carnivore I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was so wrapped up in my meal, I forgot what my companion had! The vegetables were nicely cooked and simply presented. Desserts were lovely and not too heavy. All was washed down by bottle of Nottage Hill and coffee to finish. The entire bill came to approx £40!!! Bistro is intimate with an attentive waitress.
The proprietor came out for a chat as we were finishing our coffee. He told us he tries to source all his ingredients locally…and the freshness shows. Will certainly return on our next visit to Amble and as we were so impressed with the bistro, we have decided to also sample the hospitality of their adjoining Guest House.
