Charity bike ride

Thanks to everyone who sponsored John Sutherland’s pals on their weekend charity bike ride from Tynemouth to Edinburgh in aid of the Northern Oesophago Gastric Cancer Fund.

The event raised £1,001.00 and a cheque for that amount was given to Mr. Jon Shenfine (pictured with John, left), consultant surgeon at the oesophageal cancer unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle. He was delighted with the money and said it would be put to good use.

The riders were Tony Richardson, Paul Forster, John Gary Mattocks and Colin Jones.  Rob Ewen provided the support and was the driver. John worked at Acklington Prison, and these lads were fellow officers.

Sponsors have come from as far afield as the Isle of Wight, Chester, Liverpool, and Llanelli in South Wales.

John, who was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in December 2009, underwent chemotherapy before and after an operation in May 2010. We are pleased to report that he is making good progress.
