Dramatic rescue at Little Shore (slideshow)

Amble’s rescue services were called into action today (Tuesday 23rd Aug) when a fisherman slipped into the sea, becoming wedged in a concrete crack. The angler had been fishing on the North Pier and tried to negotiate his way through the crack at the end of the pier. Two other anglers raised the alarm, which brought out both Amble’s RNLI lifeboats, the Coastguard and a Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer.

Inshore Lifeboat crewman Robert Henderson told The Ambler, “We were launched in three minutes. It was lucky for the fisherman that the other two guys made the call. They should be thanked because he was only in the water for a few minutes.”

Robert Henderson described the rescue, ” When we got there he was stuck in a crack, he was actually in the water. He was still holding on to his fishing rod. I had to ask him to let go of it!”

“The response was really quick” agreed Coastguard Ken Henderson “Many of us are on holiday at the moment so were very close by. I was actually doing paperwork in the office.”

Paramedic Trevor Nesbitt who was among the crew of the All Weather Lifeboat The Four Boys assessed the man’s injuries which he deemed were serious enough to go with the Sea King which was already on its way.

  1. Hello Ambler,

We were down at Amble pier today and we were so excited to see all this action unfolding right in front of us. The RNLI crew were fantastic to watch, and casey really enjoyed watching the helicopter! It’s great to know we have the RNLI to be called on if anyone is in danger. Great Work RNLI!
