The future of the Northumberland Foods building

Posted on 30th May 2012 | in Business News , News

The former Northumberland Foods factory is set to be demolished after complaints from locals and police that the building was not only an eyesore, but was likely to encourage further break-ins and theft.

A spokesperson for Northumberland County Council said:  “We have accepted the surrender of the ground lease of the Northumberland Foods site from the administrator. The administrator had actively marketed the site nationally for over nine months, but it attracted no interest. The building is not fit for purpose and is at the end of its useful life. We will therefore be applying for planning permission to demolish and clear the site at the earliest possible date. Once the land has been cleared, it will enable the Council to proactively promote the redevelopment of the site with the aim of bringing new jobs to Amble in the future.

“We’re currently developing a programme of works.  It is hoped that work will start around July and be complete by end October, although these dates are not confirmed yet.”
