Steamboat Inn?

Hello there, my name is David Harrison and at present I live in Nottingham, UK.

I am writing to ask for the help of your readers. At present I am doing my family tree. I have relations from your neck of the woods. Originally I am from Ashington just down the road. I am trying to discover some information about an Inn which stood in Amble called the Steamboat Inn. At present I cannot find any info about it whatsoever, The reason that I am trying to discover the history of it , is that my grandfather  Thomas Gibson was born in the inn in 1904. He had two sisters who were born in the Black Bull Inn in Warkworth. This pub as you’re probably aware is still in use to this day. My great grandfather is buried in the old East Cemetary along with other members of the family.

If you need any further info then please let me know. Thank you for your time.

Easter Egg Run

On Easter Saturday, 250 – 300 bikers took part in the annual Easter egg run, organised by Blyth Valley Motorcycle Action Group. Around 1,100 eggs were collected and £338 was raised for charity.

The eggs were delivered to the children’s wards at Rake Lane Hospital, North Tyneside, the Feeman Hospital, the RVI, and Wansbeck Hospital. Others went to Blyth Hospital and Age UK.

The organisers would like to say a special ‘Thank you’ to the Harbour Master, Simon Baxter, the Schooner Inn, the Quayside Chippy, the Widdrington Inn and Woodhorn Museum.

Soup, glorious soup

For the four Wednesdays of Lent the Coquet Churches Together hold a lunch time soup fest.  The soups are all home made by members of the Churches Together group. After many years of this tradition it has become an established event looked forward to by some 60 to 70 people each year. They donate a minimum amount of £1.50 but most people give more. The money goes each year to a selection of charities – sometimes local sometimes national. At the end of lunch a speaker gives a brief talk about their work. This year we heard from Barbara Dow for Alzheimer’s Society, George Askew Chairman of Children and Families First charity, the Amble Youth project, and Jan Casson on plans to develop a food base in Amble.

A big thank you to all those people who make this such a good social event, bringing together Amble friends of all denominations.

Postman pats

I enjoyed reading about “Scott” our singing Postie. Yes he brings a smile to your lips with his enthusiasm.   However, our regular Postie, Ian, is also worthy of a mention.

I had hoped his first name was “Ernie” as he certainly is the “The fastest Postie” in our Street.
He has developed a fast pace as he delivers our mail.  Always smiling, always immaculate, and always very polite and most of all very caring.

So to be fair to him I hope you will too agree that he is well worthy of a mention in the “Ambler”.

Christmas lights

On behalf of the Christmas Lights Committee, I would like to thank the community for their support. Because of all the rain, we had lots of problems but the lads are already working on it and planning this year’s display.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us financially. Without your support there would be no lights. Our main sponsors are Amble Town Council, Pier 81, Quayside Chippy, Schooner Hotel, Pride of Northumbria, Masonic, United Reformed Church, Thursday Club, Harbour Fish Bar and History Society. Our thanks go to all the businesses who contributed and everyone in the community for their donations.

We would like to invite everyone to our AGM at 2.00pm on Wednesday 1st May at Fourways 2.

Voting will be for Chairman, Treasurer, and Secretary. Anyone interested please contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Florence Angus

Acklington school says thanks

Our Christmas shopping event at Gray’s of Warkworth was a great success this year, raising £191 for school funds!  We’d like to say a huge thank you to Gray’s for their contribution and for hosting a very enjoyable evening. Thanks to our local sponsors: Cabosse, Alastair Turnbull Funeral Directors, Lindisfarne Mead Company, Ringtons, Brakes food suppliers and Spurreli for donating raffle prizes; and of course to everyone who attended or showed their support by buying tickets.

Thank you.

50th birthday party

birthdayI was wondering if it would be possible to thank all of the people, friends and family that made my husband’s 50th birthday such a special one! We decided to hold a fancy dress 50th birthday party at the Radcliffe Club. The costumes were all fabulous and everyone made such an effort. Over 150 people came and made Rob’s birthday such a special one. Most were local people but also old ship mates who served with Rob in the Falklands War turned up! What a really special night! Thank you all for the cards and gifts, it is most appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Andrea Hewitson
