Geoff Moscrop from North Broomhill smashed the world record with his stand of three pot leeks measuring in total 570 cubic inches.

These winning leeks were entered in the John Smith World Leek and Onion Show at the Blyth Sports Social Club. Their size was ratified by two independent judges – meaning Geoff has become world champion for the second year in a row.

Geoff was also the winner of the Hermitage Inn Leek and Horticultural Club (Warkworth) with a superb stand of 423 cubic inches (3 leeks) and he got  the cup for the best leek.

Alan Richmond was posthumously awarded the rose bowl for the most improved grower and Selby Snaith won the cup for the most points in the “other classes”.

Sadly, Alan Richmond, one of the Hermitage Club’s longest serving members died earlier this year. After his death, his leeks were tended by other members of the club, who agreed that they be entered into the annual show.

Alan’s widow Carole collected his rose bowl at the annual dinner for members and guests held after the show. Geoff Moscrop was congratulated on his sucess by the members at the dinner.

The Leek and Horticultural Club is now down to eight members, from its heyday in 2008 when it had twenty four members and a list of people wanting to join the Club.
