Ray King column
Kevin Keegan takes over. "We all eagerly await"

We’ll go no more a-roving…*

My name is Byron and I belong to Pat and Mike. We used to live in Whitley Bay and have just moved to Amble.

As soon as we arrived they started putting stuff like butter on my paws and collar. Don’t know why – must be some kind of celebration ceremony?

So I escaped into the garden as soon as possible and rubbed it all off. When I returned they seemed really glad to see me - odd since I have lived with them so long. I did this for a few times but then got fed-up and thought I would explore the territory a little further afield.

Now this is where I have to confess that I got lost. I completely forgot that it was Amble and not Whitley Bay and kept walking, thinking that I would meet some of my friends.

I did meet lots of of very kind people, they stroked me or spoke to me, some even asked me where I came from, but of course they don’t understand cat-speak.
Meanwhile Pat and Mike were asking everyone for help in finding me. They put up flyers all around Gloster Park and Gloster Meadows, they asked farmers and locals from Warkworth and Red Row. After five weeks of searching and potential sightings, they eventually gave up hope and went into mourning for their lost pet.

As for me, I fetched up at a caravan site near Glendale and as I was tired and fed-up I was glad to be looked after by some very kind people. They phoned Pat and Mike and said they thought they had found a lost and lonely Byron.

Pat jumped in the car straight away - and imagine my joy when she walked through the door and recognised me.

All three of us want to say a big thank you to everyone. We are so impressed with them all, Amble, Red Row, Hadston, Warkworth. Such an amazing community spirit, so interested and helpful and caring.

I’m a bit thin and tired after all this, but enjoyed my adventure. And for any other lost souls out there, don’t give up hope. Just ask the people of the Friendliest Port - they’ll help you.

As told to Anna Williams and Lou Pickering

*With acknowledgements to “the other” Byron.
