Reports from our County Councillors

A sense of belonging
Work is beginning in preparation for the new Unitary Council. This includes consultation on the likely structure for Area Committees. A possible option is Amble being included with South East Northumberland. I can see the logic of that idea, but accept that the view of the town seems to favour being part of the North area. It is right that Amble should ultimately decide on this and I am confident that will be the case.

Percy Drive traffic scheme
Further consultation is about to take place on a scheme to deal with traffic speeds in the Percy Drive area; this will include road humps and a chicane. No scheme will go ahead unless it has public support, but if that is the case work could start next year.

Jambo!
During Local Democracy Week I took part in a “Councillor Big Brother”; young people set tasks for councillors, then voted for their “favourite”. Amble First School are linked with schools in Africa and have been learning about their culture and music. We were asked to learn and perform, one of these songs, “Jambo”. We thoroughly enjoyed this, but I am glad I couldn’t see (or hear) my effort!

Christmas is coming!
As County Council Chairman I will be welcoming children from Amble First School to County Hall on December 11th so they can perform some Christmas music (and a polished version of “Jambo!”) This is a hectic time particularly for schools, who make a tremendous effort to involve pupils and the community in helping to capture the spirit of Christmas.I wish you all the blessings of a peaceful joyful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

There has been a lot written and a lot of talk about the proposal to include Amble within the “Urban Coastal Plain Characteristic Community” of the new Unitary Authority when it is formed. I have always made it clear that I do not support this proposal nor, I believe, do the vast majority of Amble residents.

A large number of people have contacted me to say that they thought the idea was very poorly thought out and was not something they could support.

I should make it clear, because there does seem to be some confusion, that Amble will have its own Belonging Community Forum (whatever that is) no matter to which Characteristic Community it belongs, so Amble’s voices will be heard in both proposals.

I have campaigned strongly against the proposal to sever connections with Alnwick and have had the support of Amble Town Council and Warkworth Parish Council who also share my views. At a recent full Council meeting of A.D.C. I proposed a motion (which was approved) to strongly object to the proposal and a letter to that effect was sent to the County Council. I understand that the quantity of objections received to the plan is very likely to make the planners think again and I am confident that in this instance they will listen to the people and respect the wishes of the majority of residents of Amble.

I am available to help with any queries relating to the Amble West with Warkworth Ward tel;01665 713629

May I take this opportunity to wish all readers the compliments of the season.

Jeff Watson
