Honorary Aldermen elected
Previous members of Alnwick District Council have been given the title of Honorary Aldermen at the end of the council’s existence. Included are John Hedley, Audrey Jones and Robert Arckless, (pictured with Chairman Peter Dawson, who is also now an Honorary Alderman). The awards were made at a special evening event at the end of March.
Councillors are usually elected to the title after serving three terms before retiring, either because they are not elected or because they decide not to stand for election again. The system started in 1984 and there are now 34 aldermen.
Those who have just been elected to the honour have been unable to complete their present term because of the dissolution of the district council but would have been eligible if allowed to complete it.
