Fusion
It’s all the rage now, isn’t it? Fusion in music, in food, businesses include it in their name and religious institutions calling themselves fusion. What does it really mean?

The dictionary says:
1 The act or procedure of liquefying or melting by the application of heat, and the melted state induced by heat, and thus the merging of different elements, eg the fusion of copper and zinc to form brass.
2. In physics, a nuclear reaction in which nuclei combine to form more massive nuclei with a concomitant release of energy.
3. Music that blends different styles.
4. A style of cooking that combines ingredients and techniques from different cultures or countries.

By now it probably means joining anything to anything else. There’s probably fashion fusion, home design fusion (it might look like a house, but behind the facade it’s a tent), finance fusion (you thought you had some savings, but they turned out to be somebody else’s loan – oh!, that happens all the time), language fusion (how would that go? Ciamar bist vous? Merci, buen).

In a way, it’s something we all do all the time. When we’re annoyed with someone, we try to combine forgiveness with our annoyance; when someone has hurt us, we try to combine compassion with our hurt; all the time we try to combine love with those parts of ourselves that we know are unkind and unloving. It’s often a struggle, but we struggle onwards towards our personal fusion.
