Capt’n Coquet’s Corner
Puffing Puffin
The Coquet Island bird season is well under way and already we have eider ducklings leaving the island and heading for the harbour, a pair of Canada geese are proudly marching round the island with their six healthy goslings and the first of the year’s roseate terns are on eggs.
This means that the wardens on Coquet have to guard the birds 24 hours a day to protect them for disturbance and from the attention of egg thieves. Night watches can be a bit chilly, even at this time of the year so Stephen Lunn, blacksmith artist from Red Row, has come to the rescue and made a unique miniature wood-burning stove for the observation hide.
Stephen has made a succession of articles for the island in order to help the RSPB do the best job it can to keep Coquet a special place for the birds.

The stove, nicknamed “Puffing Puffin” has had its inaugural lighting, health and safety inspection, followed by a celebratory cooking of bacon sandwiches on the hot plate, which Stephen added to the top so that wardens can make cups of coffee to help them keep alert through the hours of darkness. |
