Born to fly
by Matt Donoghue
The pigeons race from France today
five hundred mile or more
I sent the good blue hen again
she’s been there twice before
eight thousand birds she beat last year
when she won seventh place
thirteen hours on the wing
a true long distance race
She’s bred to fly the distance
her grand sire won from Spain
her dam she topped the combine
from Lillers in the rain
four generations before her
long distance races won
and I have expectations
for her daughter and her son
They were up at six this morning
in a light north westerly breeze
twelve hundred yards a minute
she should manage that with ease
she’s been well trained and she’s fit
the best she’s ever been
I sent her sitting twelve day eggs
so she should be nice and keen
I stand beside my loft now
and watch the clouds float by
looking for my pigeon
high up in the sky
my clock and thimble ready
to time her when she lands
my heart is beating faster
and I have shaking hands
Twelve hours from liberation
I see her race for home
now she folds her wings back
she’s dropping like a stone
her rubbers off the clock is struck
her race is over done
she settles down upon her nest
I think – I know she’s won.
