Marina and Lifeboat Station celebrate as dredging finished in record time

Good weather and hard work have led to the completion of dredging at Amble Marina in record time. Now the work starts all over again to ensure that dredging can take place again in five years time!

Five years and a half million pound investment have ensured that there is deep water at all states of the tide at Amble Marina and the town’s RNLI lifeboat station. Amble Marina brought in Humber Work Boats to dredge thousands of tonnes of sand and silt from the Marina basin to ensure the safety of all 250 boats berthed there and to secure the future of the business, which is a major success story for the town and a major contributor to the local economy.

Managing director Karl Brunton said “It took a great deal of hard work just to secure the necessary licences but when the dredger the ‘John M’ arrived on site the desk work changed to hands on boat work and the staff faced the challenge of moving all the boats berthed here not once, but twice within four weeks to enable the operation to take place.

Now that our customers’ boats are back in their permanent berths, we will start planning the next dredge.

With the John M here we were also able to work with the RNLI in Amble to enable the lifeboat bay and entrance to be dredged when the Marina was finished.”
Andy Clift, RNLI Divisional Inspector, said he is very grateful to Amble Marina and Humber Work Boats for carrying out the dredging work.

He added: “As a charity which receives no government funding, the RNLI relies on the generosity and support of companies like Amble Marina and Humber Work Boats. If the berth had not been dredged, the lifeboat may have been unable to launch at certain states of the tide, with obvious implications for the RNLI's lifesaving operations off the north east coast.”

Karl Brunton said “I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our staff, customers, Coquet View Leisure Park and Amble residents for their support and understanding. It is a necessary operation for the Lifeboat and the Marina and we hope that it will not be too long before Warkworth Harbour is dredged again too.”
