On May 5th, the UK Government is to hold a referendum on changing the voting system for electing MPs to the UK Parliament.

This is a chance to vote either for or against the Alternative Vote (AV). At the moment, voters are asked to choose one candidate from amongst a list. With the AV system, voters would be asked to rank the candidates in order of preference. For an easy to understand free resource on AV go to www.learningpool.com

The Electoral Commission will be posting out an explanatory leaflet to every household in the UK nearer to polling day. This will explain in more depth the proposed changes to the UK voting system.

If you are unable to get to a polling station or if you are away from the area on polling day, you can apply for a postal or proxy vote.  To arrange a postal or proxy vote, ring the Northumberland County Council elections office on 01670 533307 elections@northumberland.gov.uk
