New Harbour Master: my door is always open
As the new Harbour Master, I thought I would let you know a bit about me and my role. Firstly, I must say a huge thank you to my predecessor Alan Punton who retired in June, leaving huge boots to fill!

I’ve been made to feel incredibly welcome since I arrived at the harbour. I was previously Alan’s assistant, and I’ve got to know and appreciate the close, caring community in and around the harbour.
It’s a busy environment with very hardworking folk who successfully balance the pressures of a modern working harbour with thriving tourist industry.
It’s been a very warm and busy summer – the weather has definitely drawn in more visitors, and it’s been a joy to watch families enjoying a traditional British seaside holiday with fish and chips and a dip at the Little Shore.
That said, it’s been ongoing battle for Eddy and me to keep on top of the litter and general detritus around the harbour. We all have a role to play in keeping the town and harbour as clean as possible to protect our urban and marine environment, instil good habits in the next generation and encourage visitors to enjoy the town.

We achieved our dream of moving to Amble at the start of the year and it’s everything we hoped – friendly, warm and fun! I spent many years as a soldier in the British Army serving in operational tours all over the world. I loved the army and many of the skills and discipline I learned are transferable to my new role.
I most recently taught junior soldiers at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate and it was a pleasure to watch so many fine young men and women fulfil their ambition.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know so many people – and our two West Highland Terriers seem to have their own fan club. I’m looking forward to working with different groups in the community to hear your views on the future of the harbour, and my door is always open for a chat and a brew.
