Learn to dance in Amble

Earlier this Spring, “Eddie Billington Dancing” began ballroom and latin dance classes in Amble. There was a good response with a large turnout and, despite a few early withdrawals, what started out to be a 6 week programme at the beginning of February, continued on through until the end of May!

“There was a lot of enthusiasm amongst the group, who were fantastic to work with” said Eddie.

Classes ran for an hour and covered the basics in Waltz, Social Foxtrot, Quickstep and Cha Cha Cha.

“Everyone seemed to have great fun, and all seem very keen to come back when the classes resume in September” he continued. “We’ll be getting into Tango, Jive and Rumba, as well as building on our ballroom routines.”

Because of the success of the existing group, Eddie aims to start another beginners class for weekly lessons and will advertise in the weeks prior to September. In the meantime, any would be dancers are welcome to contact Eddie if they want to be included in the new classes.

Eddie Billington can be contacted on eddie.bill@tiscali.co.uk, or 01665 721029 (H), or 07914920458 (M)

Drama workshop

Calling all young stars of the future.
Following a very successful event last summer, Warkworth Drama Group plans to hold Children’s Drama Workshops on Saturday July 17th in Warkworth Memorial Hall.
Tutors Deborah Court and Cathy Brumby will be on hand to teach, encourage and enable children to take part in performances. The Workshops offer a chance to improve speech, movement and acting skills, leading to greater self-confidence on stage. Last year’s participants had a lot of fun and produced amazing results in a very short time.
We are always on the look-out for talented youngsters, particularly as pantomime-time approaches. If your child falls into age groups 6 -9 (morning workshop) or 9 -14 (afternoon workshop), contact Diana Webber Tel 01665 713439, e-mail diana.webber@btinternet.com, for further details and an application form. The cost per child is £6.00, booking essential, as places are limited.

Philip Warren ARPS and Sandy Furness ARPS, AFIAP, MPAGB, PSA4* gave presentations of their work, together with helpful advice about how to take good photographs and edit them to get the best possible results.

The Bank Holiday weekend saw APG photographers taking photos of the horses and 10K runners at Druridge Bay Country Park.

Royal British Legion charity event

Veterans George Skipper and Lyndsay Williamson with Col Arthur Charlton Col Arthur Charlton, Deputy Lt of Co Durham gave a fascinating talk on ‘The History of the Iron Cross from Napoleon to the present day.’

The youngest veteran, Lyndsay Williamson of Amble, who has served in Afganistan is pictured left wearing her medals (which Arthur discussed) together with Col Charlton and George Skipper of Amble who is an 86 year old D- Day veteran.

Many thanks to everyone who gave their support on the night including Strands Hairdressers, Lloyds Bank, Tesco, Co-op, Harbour Fish Bar, Jaspers, Zecca, Fourways, Greggs the Bakers, Sainsburys, Homebase, The Greenhouse, The Jackdaw, Cabosse, Hermitage Inn. Boots the Chemist, Morrisons, and The Flower Centre. The raffle raised £409 which will be shared between SSAFA and The Royal British Legion.

We want to encourage new members and you don’t have to be ex-service to come along. Meetings are held every two months and there is a yearly £11 subscription to the Royal British Legion.

Opportunities exist to apply to visit the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Our members mainly come from Amble, Warkworth, Acklington, and Broomhill though some live away from the area but keep their branch affiliation. If you wish to talk to someone about joining the British Legion, visit the stall at Amble Lifeboat Day on Sun 29 Aug and at Warkworth Show on Sat Aug 21 to recruit new members and poppy collectors.

The branch will celebrate its 90th birthday in 2011 and is proud of its continuous service in the community raising funds for the Royal British Legion.

What next for the Trust?
