Through the Lens photography competition

A great exhibition of all the photographs entered in the Through the Lens competition, was held in the Parish Hall over the May Bank Holiday weekend. The views showing Amble and Hauxley throughout the year, at different times of the day created a picture of an interesting and attractive area. Every photo contributed to the attractiveness of the exhibition. The organisers thank all entrants for every photo.

Shortly after the Reverend Diane Westmoreland arrived in Amble, she read a letter in The Ambler from a visitor complaining about the state of the town – litter-strewn and uncared for. Diane totally disagreed and wondered what could be done to combat this view. She thought of a photo competition, St. Cuthbert’s Church council supported the idea and a small group organised it, with the support of Amble Photographic Group. The general agreement was that it did prove the writer of the letter to be wrong.

The exhibition included displays of photos from Amble Photographic Group, and photos from the past, mainly provided by the Social History Group. The competition was judged by professional photographer, Nigel Lowder, who lives in Amble, and he displayed some of his photographs.

Satisfyingly large numbers of visitors came to view and on the Monday cream teas were served and the prizes awarded. There was quite a party atmosphere.
The organisers thank again those who donated prizes and supported in other ways, especially Amble Town Council who gave us £200 towards administration costs which got us started. Thanks also go to Amble Boat Company, Harbour Fish Bar, Co-op Funeralcare, Zecca, Nickalls and Company, Amble Youth Project, Amble Photographic Group, the Cedar Café and individual contributors. Congratulations to the prize winners and thanks to all who entered, from the organising committee.
