Who’s ya Granny?
One of our readers, ‘Toussaint Chevalier’, has contacted The Ambler to tell us about his grandparents, Rev. Leonard and Audrey Sherratt, who served at the United Reformed Church in Amble and Warkworth from 1977 until 1983.
We contacted the Sherratts at their present home in the Northern Territory of Australia where they continue to minister, on a freelance basis, wherever required.
The Sherratts were married in 1956, and Leonard followed the call he’d had from his teenage years in 1964. He was ordained to a ministry in Merseyside in April 1970 at the Marlowe Road Church. In 1976 the couple were invited to minister at the Warkworth United Reformed Church. They lived at the Butts in Warkworth, next to the Church.

When the Minister in Amble left, a group of ladies (Mrs. Gunter, Mrs. Alcock, Mrs. Armstrong and Mrs. Cuthbertson) invited the Rev. Sherratt to take over their congregation, and a joint pastorate with Warkworth was established.Leonard and Audrey have many fond memories of their years in the North East.In July 1983, the Uniting Church in Australia called the Sherratts to the far side of the world, and they have lived and served in Oatlands and Hobart, Tasmania, Seymour and Mirboo North, and Meeniyan parishes in Victoria, as well as a Prison Chaplaincy at Sale in Victoria. |

Five years ago, Leonard and Audrey moved to the Northern Territory to be closer to their daughter, Samantha, and son-in-law, John. Leonard was a locum Minister at Palmerston, where they live for a year, and they were casual visitors to Jabiru, a mainly Aboriginal Church. With their freelance work, Leonard served with a bush Church as Associate Pastor. They also run a house group known as the Grace Family, which meets two Sundays a month. Leonard and Audrey: “We have had love and faithful support from many wonderful people over the years. We retain a deep affection for the people of Amble and Northumberland. We are grateful to God for the many opportunities we have had to serve Him.” |
