The expansion of one Amble business has meant a relocation and expansion opportunity for two others. When web developer Colin Harris, surveyor Kris Burnett and accountant Malcolm Shield set up shop in Queen Street in Easter 2011, the old newsagent’s premises provided an ideal home for the three small businesses.
But now Colin Harris Web Development has grown to employ six members of staff, so when the old Shaw shoe shop on Bridge Street became available, Kris and Malcolm saw it as a great opportunity.
“The premises are ideal,” said Malcolm, “and now we are on a street with other professionals and away from the retail outlets. We’ve had more footfall – now it’s more generic for us.”

“We did a fair bit of work refurbishing the old shoe shop and replacing the old signage,” said Kris, “and then we met Samuel Palin, who was looking for space for his solicitor’s practice, so we all took this together.”
Kris has now taken the opportunity to expand his business KB Surveying. He now has a part time estimator and a student intern. “Part of having extra space has helped me expand. Andrew Potter is my estimator; he takes my drawings and breaks them down into quantities and cost. Stephanie Wilding is my intern, she is studying for her Diploma in Architecture at the University of Portsmouth, and so I’m helping her with her training.”

KB Surveying provides designs, estimates, project management and structural calculations for all types of building work. You can contact Kris and his team on 01665 711336 or 07746720311, email info@kbsurveying.co.uk, or visit www.kbsurveying.co.uk.

Two local solicitors have joined forces and created a new law practice with a base in Amble. Samuel Palin and Richard Twyford set up their new venture to provide legal advice for individuals and businesses in Northumberland.
Sam moved to Amble nine years ago and trained with Sanderson McCreath & Edney in Alnwick and Berwick before setting up his own practice.

“I set up on my own in Gosforth last November,” said Sam. “I’ve been looking for premises in Amble and heard that the old Shaw’s shoe shop was going to be available. Now Richard has joined me, it means one of us can be here almost all of the time. We wanted a base in Northumberland near where we both live and so it’s worked out perfectly.”
Richard lives near Alnwick, and trained at Adam Douglas & Son in both Alnwick and Berwick. He is quickly becoming fond of the Friendliest Port.

“I’m enjoying it so far, it’s a very friendly town. We want to provide Amble with more legal services, but also we want to be flexible. We’ll work all over Northumberland. We can visit people at home or at their business and we can do out of hours appointments as well,” he said.

“Richard has excellent experience in family and property work,” said Sam. “Together we can provide legal advice in many areas including property, civil litigation, wills and probate, family law and business.”
“We’re also going to be running promotions – the first of which is 20% off our usual fees if we are instructed before the end of January 2013.”
