Over fifty patients from the Coquet Medical group, along with GP, Dr, Ben Burville and Sister Michelle James attended the meeting chaired by Derek Conway.

Professor Taylor is leading UK research into reversing Type 2 Diabetes and explained to his audience about the trials which he had organised at the university putting patients on an 800 calorie a day diet. Dramatic weight loss had shown a decrease in sugar levels and caused the vital organs to work properly in the control of insulin in the blood stream.

Meeting chairman and organiser, Derek Conway from Warkworth commented, “We are very fortunate locally as Dr. Burville and Sister Michelle James give fantastic support to Diabetics. The Coquet Medical Group is one of the most proactive GP practices in the north-east on treating Diabetes patients”.

He added, “There are over 900 patients with Type 2 Diabetes on the local GP surgery list, with as many again very near to developing the disease, so it is an issue that has to be taken seriously.  Getting Professor Taylor to come up to our area and talk about his work was so encouraging.  This is one of the country’s most eminent medical researcher yet he was more than ready to give his time to visit us.”

Amble & Warkworth Diabetes UK Group is a branch of the national charity Diabetes UK and was founded three years ago to encourage the exchange of information and ideas to support people with Diabetes.  There is no formal membership or joining fee and the Open Meetings are available to anyone with no charge made for attending.  People attend from Alnwick to Blyth, but mostly from Amble, Hadston, Acklington, Shilbottle and Warkworth
