Unusual visitors over the summer

This summer Ambler readers have spotted some unusual visitors in their gardens, and kindly sent us these photos.

Hugh Tindall saw a juvenile white House Sparrow in July, Steven Golding got this great photo of a juvenile white Swallow seen in August, while Peter Redpath noticed a Nightjar in his Amble garden in mid September.

Peter said: “These birds are not normally seen this far up in Northumberland. They are crepuscular, normally flying and feeding at night. They should have started their migration south to the Congo in August. Happily the bird stirred and flew off shortly after 5 and hopefully is now down on the south coast preparing for its channel crossing.”

And on Coquet Island, two Razorbill chicks hatched for the first time this year.  Although a small number of Razorbills have been seen attempting to breed on the island reserve since 2021, this year marks the first successful fledging of chicks.
