24-year-old Luke McTaggart becomes Amble’s new Mayor

Congratulations to Luke McTaggart, who has become Amble’s new Mayor at the age of 24. Luke only joined Amble Town Council in May this year; he has now been elected Mayor – and as far as we can tell, is currently the youngest Mayor in the UK.

Luke says, “I was born and bred in Amble, and have a great love for the town and our community. My focus will be on strengthening the town council’s role as an effective voice for local residents. I want us to be proactive at addressing concerns and issues with the county council, whilst also building constructive partnerships.

“I’ve been involved with drafting Amble’s neighbourhood plan since the outset; that’s one of the main reasons I got involved with local politics.

“Looking to the future, I’m also a supporter of Amble Development Trust’s new sports village project as I know the town is crying out for better sports facilities. I will be focused on how the town council can play a key role in Amble’s continuing regeneration.

“In the short term, we’ve got a very full in-tray, pressing for answers on the urgent issues facing Amble, such as Percy Drive, and the public toilets refurbishment.”

Luke added, “We’ve got a great team of councillors volunteering their time, who are committed to improving Amble.  I can’t wait to get stuck into the role.”

Luke is a professional artist and co-director of Dovecote Street Arts. He attended James Calvert Spence College and Northumbria University.
