What You Say#155
Baptised by the North Sea

Robert’s big splash
For my 80th birthday my wife and I went to stay with some really good friends who live in Blyth. We live in Norfolk. It was also our friend Kate’s 70th birthday.
On my birthday, they decided to take us to my favourite place….Amble!
We enjoyed sausages and coffee, then went for a beautiful stroll in lovely weather along the jetty.
I am disabled and while Kate pushed me in my wheelchair, her husband and my wife strolled along.
It was really beautiful and Kate wanted a picture of me with the sea behind me. So, she turned my chair round. Just as she did that a huge wave came over the railing and soaked me!!
It was so funny, but wonderful, that I was baptised by the North Sea on my 80th birthday! Amble is still and always will be my favourite place.

Warkworth Show looking for volunteers
We are looking for volunteers to help with next years Warkworth Show on Saturday 22 August.
We are always looking for new members to join our committees to bring new ideas.
Other roles include being a steward for outside the tents or steward for inside the tents, helping to set up on the Friday before and the day of the show.
There are many different roles and any help is much appreciated. Whether you can spare an hour or the whole day, we’d be over the moon for your help.
Please contact enquiries@warkworthshow.co.uk if you would like to volunteer.
Preparation for the show is already underway, follow us on Facebook ‘Warkworth Show’ for regular updates.

Thank you to Christmas Lights committee
On behalf of Amble Christmas Lights committee, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported them this year. That support has come in many different ways, from the Town Council, private donations, paying for a light above your business, having a collection tin, donating a vehicle to help in the putting up process, and donating time to collect money.
On a personal level, I would also like to thank the volunteers who work and maintain the lights all year round, which all goes to make the high street look amazing at Christmas

Lights committee need help
I write to you as a concerned relative of an 84 year-old gentleman who is part of the team responsible for creating and erecting the Christmas lights every year.
The team does not consist of anyone under the age of 70.
I would never suggest that they require support in the maintaining and creating of new lights as this work creates a social hub for them to get together throughout the year.
My concern is they are still climbing ladders to erect the lights and each year there is an expectation that families can attend the switch on and enjoy their hard work, yet none of those attending offer their support in erecting the lights.
I feel this may be because they have no idea of the age of the team and the risk they put themselves at each year for their enjoyment.
Also perhaps mechanical support could be offered by local businesses, such as a cherry picker to reduce risk of fall.

Thank you to my happy artists
To all of my happy artists a big thank you for sharing your time to create great paintings and lots of laughs this year. Also to firstly, Amble Library, a much needed place to meet and join a few folk.
And secondly, to the NTC for helping us use their room and improve our ideas, thank you for supporting me, and those who help all of those trying to improve on future projects for Amble. I wish you all a Merry Xmas and the best for 2026. God Bless.

Congratulations on King’s Award
I am writing to offer my heartfelt congratulations to everyone at Amble Development Trust on receiving the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
This prestigious honour is a true reflection of the outstanding work you deliver day in, day out for the people of Amble and the wider area.
The dedication, passion and commitment shown by your staff, volunteers and board is second to none, and this award recognises the difference you make to local lives and the strength of the community you help to build.
As someone who has worked closely with community organisations for many years, I know just how much effort, time and heart goes into sustaining projects that support residents, revitalise our towns and bring people together. Your team embodies the very best of that spirit, and this award is richly deserved.
Please pass on my warmest congratulations to everyone involved. You should all be immensely proud of this achievement.
