The owner of Amble’s new bookshop, Fi McEwan–Thompson, (pictured) has been working hard in preparation for the opening. Originally from Durham, her love for seaside towns has drawn her to Amble and its growing community of independent retailers.

The bookshop is a completely new venture for her, one that she has never considered doing before. With a background in education she is a champion of the need for people to read more, particularly actual books. With the move towards more books finding their way into homes, particularly for young people, this is a positive move which will benefit Amble and the surrounding area.

The building is bright with easily accessible shelves and space to sit and enjoy the book experience.

Inclusive is a word often used by Fi as she is particularly interested in appealing to the Amble community as a whole. There will be the opportunity to enjoy tea and coffee and conversation with other customers in a safe space.

There will be the whole range of books on offer from romance through fiction and crime thrillers. Fi is particularly interested in promoting the work of local authors and these were some of the first books I saw when we met. There is a section with Feminism, LGBTQ, Well Being, Self Care and Sustainability. Future projects will include Poetry Therapy.

She would like her customers to write reviews about their experience in the shop so that she can learn from their visits.

Fi wants to thank the local community for their support which she described as welcome and incredible. She said that the feeling of being wanted in a town which is obviously expanding was amazing. Amble was described recently in a national newspaper as being the friendliest place in England.

Bridge Street Books is located at 4a Bridge Street, Amble, NE65 0DR and will open for business at the beginning of June.
