Harbour news: Little Shore spruce up
Another busy spell at the harbour since the last edition ofThe Ambler. The start of the arrival of tourists and visitors are a welcome sight as is the return of swimmers and “The Swimblers” to the water at the Little Shore. I have mentioned to some of the Swimblers that the Orcas are back; however, this does not seem to deter them in any way!
Rachel (pictured) and Eddie have made a superb job of renovating the be
ach huts which have all had new timbers fitted, roof felt put on and painted. The grass to the front has been cut, the weeds removed and I have to say, the whole area looks brilliant.
It was fantastic to see the huge motorcycle rally arrive in Amble at the start of April. It’s only the second time that I have seen this, and I think our town showed great support to these men and women who take part in this fantastic venture each year. I was told by the organisers that they had over 1,200 motorcycles taking part this year. It was truly amazing to see them parked up on Harbour Road car park.
You will all have noticed the large boat which is berthed on the quayside outside the harbour office. This is the dredger which is due to start work within the harbour around the middle of June, so we can expect to see a lot of waste removal from the riverbed during this period.
We have repaired and replaced damaged timbers at the end of the pier and are about to start work replacing a number of the large timbers along Broomhill Quay.
Later in the summer we are planning to start work on renovating the lighthouse on the south breakwater, so please do not be alarmed when you see scaffolding being erected around it.
So, after the Puffin Festival, and the funfair, we have the Colony Music Festival to enjoy and hopefully, weather to match the fantastic summer we had last year.
For the dog owners, you may not be aware that we provide free dog biscuits, dog bags and drinking water for your canine friends at the front of the harbour office; please help yourself.
As always, I will finish off by wishing you all a fantastic start to the summer and I look forward to talking to the many people who stop me to chat day to day across the harbour.
