Amble woman’s medical legacy

Sometimes change comes from an unexpected source. In one quiet, unassuming example, an Amble woman’s legacy is helping shape medical research studies.

A medical research protocol which was named after Danielle Cruickshank, who sadly died in 2022, required researchers to formally involve patients and public when carrying out their work.

A new study on the potential use of patient and public involvement (PPI) in the future has now been published.

It confirms the importance of engaging patients and their families, but says a stronger set of terms of reference is needed for how researchers act, engage and verify work done with them. It is not certain the protocol will become mandatory, and even if it did, it may not continue to be named after Danielle, but her name is still proudly linked to the original process.

The link to the online study can be found here.
