Franciscan pilgrimage to visit Amble

Each year on 4 October, Christians and many others around the world celebrate the Feast of St Francis of Assisi – the joyful friar whose life of simplicity, compassion, and kinship with all creation continues to inspire many today.

This year is the 800th anniversary of his death, and as we approach this milestone, we celebrate not only the memory of a saint, but a living movement of peace, reconciliation, and joyful love that our world still needs today.

The Society of St Francis (SSF) is organising a pilgrimage which will be split into stages and will visit the Anglican Franciscan Houses starting in Alnmouth and ending at Hilfield Friary in Dorset.

Stage one will begin on the 18 July from Alnmouth Friary and the first stop that evening will be in Amble. St Cuthbert’s Church will host the walkers with refreshments that evening in the Church. The next stages are as follows:

Sunday 19 July from Amble to Newbiggin, Monday 20 July from Newbiggin to Cramlington, Tuesday 21 July from Cramlington to Newcastle Upon Tyne, Wednesday 22 July from Newcastle Upon Tyne to Chester-le-Street, Thursday 23 July from Chester-le-Street to Durham.

You can join any of these stages just for the day. If you want to find out more details about the year of celebration, go to the Spirit of Francis web site www.spiritoffrancis.com. For the Pilgrimage itself follow the link to www.spiritoffrancis.com/2026-franciscan-peace-pilgrimage/

The Franciscan Peace Pilgrimage offers a unique invitation to step away from the noise of everyday life and walk a path of purpose, reflection, and renewal.

Each pilgrimage – rooted in history, culture, and spiritual tradition, offers its own sacred rhythm, inviting you to slow down, breathe deeply, and rediscover what truly matters.

At the heart of these journeys lies a powerful call to hope, peace, and reconciliation. In a world often marked by division and unrest, walking together with open hearts can become an act of healing.

The pilgrimages create space for personal and collective transformation, where wounds can be acknowledged, stories shared, and bridges built across difference.

Whether you walk for forgiveness, understanding, or new beginnings, each step becomes a prayer for peace within ourselves and in the world.

These pilgrimages are more than just travel, they’re opportunities for reflection, discovery, and personal growth. Whether you’re seeking spiritual renewal, cultural insight, or simply adventure, the series provides a captivating path to follow.
